More stitches for the wee one

I have been a gift-making machine lately. Above and below are the latest gifts that are going into the mail tomorrow for baby Daniel.

I made this diaper bag without a pattern, however it was rather easy to complete since it was basically a series of rectangles sewn together. There are a total of 10 pockets on this baby, so hopefully Ruth will be able to store everything in there that she and Danny need. The outside of the bag is made from an Amy Butler cotton print and the inside is a polka-dot cotton I found at Jo-Ann’s to match. I fused iron-on vinyl onto all of the pieces to make the entire bag water-repellent because… well… there’s going to be a baby around this thing, and those things leak all sorts of gross stuff.

I also made a changing pad from an old Alexander Henry print I have been hording for a few years. The underside is terrycloth and it’s quilted with 4 layers of batting to help keep it soft and cushy. I ended up pre-washing the changing pad’s fabrics numerous times on high heat to pre-shrink everything as much as possible due to the aforementioned leaking scenarios.

And into the box it all goes! I spent so much time on them it’s strange to let it all go, but I know Ruth will appreciate my stitched efforts more than most.

Artist Yu Yu Art and her tiny creations
Despite my Southern upbringing, I don’t have any plans to get married any time soon. Although if I did, I would most definitely get my cake toppers from Yu Yu Art who makes delightfully intricate characters from roving. Check out their flickr for more photos of their work, including adorable... Continue Reading

Project Runway, Ep. 2
Oh, Project Runway. Is there any other show that I will subject myself to slowly downloading on my computer to watch during my day off? Venture Bros. aside, most likely not. Last night’s episode wasn’t drenched in the tears of the contestants, but it was entertaining nonetheless. In the end... Continue Reading

It’s so Real
While in my doctor’s waiting room around 9pm, I was privy to a rather heated argument outside: Man 1: Hey Jason, when we gonna head back to your girlie’s place, man? Jason: What? I done told you to call me The Deal. Man 1: What? Jason: You know. Like, the... Continue Reading

Tiny Chucks for Tiny Daniel
It might be safe to say I’m a little obsessed with Chuck Taylors. I have approximately 10 pairs in almost every color, however I almost always wear one of my two favorite pairs. You’d think my pair of orange ones were part of my anatomy since they were attached to... Continue Reading

Today on Etsy’s blog is a project from my book Dorm Decor. Check out the tutorial from this week’s How-Tuesday to see how to make a no-sew, cut-out zebra rug. From Michelle at Etsy: College living is an extreme in decorating challenges: limited space, limited funds, and limited time. In... Continue Reading

Julia Stiles “saves” the environment with fashion
Today at work I found myself pouring over InFashion catalogs trying to find a reference for a certain trend. Normally I find these books incredibly inspiring, but today they were making me loathe the fact that I was in my cubicle. Perhaps it was the sunny day outside, or maybe... Continue Reading

Project Runway Ep.1 Recap on SewStylish
This year’s Project Runway season premiere was broadcast last night and it was just as drenched in drama and tears as I had hoped (seriously what good is reality TV really if someone isn’t crying?) Each week I’ll be doing a recap of the episodes on the SewStylish website, and... Continue Reading

Not your grandma’s slideshow
There were several things my family made me sit through as I was growing up, but slideshows were never one of them. Perhaps I just missed that phase in technology, or maybe my family took pity on me. A few weeks ago my friend Daniel and I went to see... Continue Reading
